Retina UK is a charity supporting people affected by inherited sight loss and investing in medical research to help make their challenges a thing of the past. Affinity Lottery is a pooled weekly lottery platform that enables charities of any size to quickly and easily set-up and manage a weekly lottery product with little to no risk.

Goal

Retina UK is a small charity with a loyal supporter base, many of whom have a strong personal connection to their cause. The charity was looking for ways to attract more, more diverse, supporters whilst providing existing supporters with an additional way to engage. After some research they felt that a weekly lottery was the ideal way to achieve this and approached the team at Woods Valldata about Affinity.

Limited Cancellations

Often in regular giving programmes there is a level of no-shows and attrition within the first year. Retina UK have seen less than 8% cancellations from those who have signed up to the lottery. Lottery lends itself to a minimum attrition due to its low entry ask and chance of winning something in return. The team at Retina UK, however, have gone one step further and implemented a stewardship journey for all new supporters / players including a welcome email, quarterly update emails and winners emails.

database Growth

One of the key objectives for Retina UK in launching the lottery was to grow their existing database, as well as further engaging existing supporters. They’re really happy with the response to weekly lottery in the first year since launch.

Recruitment into the lottery has utilised mostly organic channels including:

  • Organic social media posts
  • Emails to the existing base
  • Postcard inserts in other mailings such as their quarterly magazine
  • Website homepage space

£10,000 Unrestricted Income Achieved

Weekly lottery provides unrestricted regular giving income for charities. This makes it a sustainable way to raise money which can be utilised where it is needed most. Retina UK have raised a massive £10,000 from their lottery in its first year. And they’re looking to keep on growing to raise even more for their good cause.
